Brownlie’s interest in abandoned buildings began some 10 years ago, when she worked with a paranormal group, scouting locations for investigations, but her fascination with the supernatural was honed in childhood by her mum’s stories of the eerie Gill Hall Estate nearby in Dromore, Co Down. All the accoutrements of daily life arranged or strewn in a manner wholly unique to the people who once inhabited the space.

The box of letters gives a sense of what Northern Ireland was like in the late 1800’s and gives something of a social history through the minutiae of ordinary people’s lives.Apart from providing accommodation to people with a housing need, bringing vacant homes back into use helps rejuvenate areas in decline. Focus began to shift from paranormal interest towards insight into the history and lives of the people who lived and worked in buildings from years gone by. The small town began to grow and thrive following the arrival of Norman adventurer William Marshal in the 1200s.

A lighthouse, a street, old cottages, and the church 'Teampall na Marbh' which hosts the graves of the people of Scattery, encapsulate the isolated life that was once led on Scattery. Some visitors to the overgrown Moore Hall and its grounds have described it as “magical”, a “hidden gem” and something out of a “fairy tale”. This nineteenth-century manor was home to Thomas Lefroy (Lord Chief Justice of Ireland and reported muse for Pride and Prejudice’s Mr Darcy) . Ireland’s historic ghost villages - IrishCentral

Bursting with engaging and often surprising details, each haunting photograph is an invitation to immerse yourself in history, and an Ireland long gone. Locals say that James was conjuring demons, which attracted a poltergeist to the house, causing the family’s nightmare. Currently she’s on a mission to try and photograph Millbrook House, a 9,000sq ft decaying mansion built in 1885 in Co Laois, before renovations start. This beautiful castle was once home to the Foxhall family, before it was turned into a Gothic castle. When I got home and started editing, I noticed something in the glass door that I hadn’t noticed at the time.The faded grandeur lends a sadness to many images, while others — like the sight of sleeping sacks still lining the workhouse floor — are haunting, not because of ghostly fears but because they hint at real-life horrors. However, for much of the past 50 years the house has sat empty and a prey to vandals, with anything of worth in the interior long since gone.

It was bought by Mayo County Council in 2018 for €400,000 with the intention of enhancing and developing it as a nature reserve and tourist attraction.Photographer Rebecca Brownlie had just left the empty canteen in an old abandoned convent school when she paused to take a picture of the building’s impressive staircase. It was aptly described in a 2010 article in the Journal of the Bannow Historical Society as “a place that has much more history than it has present. This ‘angel of death’ can be distinguished by her ghostly wail, which is said to reverberate throughout the castle. These busy years faded with the austerity of war, and the property gradually declined and was sold to the State, which failed to care adequately for the house. The governor and staff occupied the central portion of the building, allowing them to easily monitor and access all wings that were connected to this hub.
