I love that Wathen’s, I think it’s an absolutely brilliant, interesting and unique bourbon and this Ezra Brooks 99 Bourbon Whiskey comes across like a toned down, slightly more caramel-driven, version of that awesome whiskey. So if you’ve had any of those Wathen’s, and liked them, you’ll probably like this too – or vice versa. Though if you’re looking for the same-old Ezra Brooks taste… this ain’t it.

A billboard advertising the Ezra Brooks brand was featured in the film The Sting. [4] This was an anachronism, however. Definitely among my favorite “bottom shelf bourbons”. The aroma brings in plenty of dark fruit, sometimes coming through as dried blueberries, to compliment the slivers of oak; Palate is not as rich or deep as the aroma but still pleasant with more of a grain presence; Finish is a nice sweet fade. The oak presence increases as it opens. The biggest problem with bottom-shelf bourbon really is that there are too many options to choose from! How will you know which fits your taste buds best? Fortunately, they aren’t too expensive (that’s part of the point), so you should definitely try a few.

Palate with Water: The water really brings out green oak flavors and lowers some of the heat. I can taste mint and green grass much more strongly now. The orange makes an appearance with caramel and candied walnuts. Overall very sweet with less heat, pepper, and warmth. Bottling is the final step. While it seems obvious that the aged bourbon goes from the barrel into the bottle, there is an intermediary step for some bourbons. Those that go through charcoal filtering or the Lincoln County Process! Ezra Brooks Bourbon is a good standard bourbon. Nothing to hate on and nothing to celebrate about either. It delivers a satisfactory bourbon experience and somedays that’s all you need to make you happy. And today, I’m happy. Just like whiskey! Except in America. With corn. And aged in new charred barrels. But that doesn’t help you if you’re new to whiskey, does it? Setting those concerns aside, what has become of Ezra Brooks? In the past, the brand carried a seven year age statement, with single barrel bottlings (called “Ezra B”) coming in 15 and 12 year iterations.
