About this deal

The oven temperature is a bit lower than normal, as I don’t want the sponges to brown too much. This also comes somewhat from the brands of colours that you use! Red food colouring, orange food colouring, yellow food colouring, green food colouring, blue food colouring and purple food colouring. for the sponge mixtures! First, place your leftover slices on a plate or baking tray. Freeze them for 10-15 minutes until they’re nice and solid.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the shortening and butter on medium speed with an electric mixer until light yellow.

For the best color, try clear vanilla extract! It can be found in the party and cake supplies sections at WalMart, Hobby Lobby, or Michael's crafts. I use a large metal scraper to decorate the sides of the cake, and a small angled spatula to also help cover the sponges – and its much easier and you are going to get a smoother finish using these as well! Clean the cake pans and repeat the baking and cooling process with the remaining three cake layers.

Level the cake rounds. Level each of the cake rounds, then spread a small amount of buttercream beneath where the center of the cake will sit to hold it in place. Put the first cake layer on top on your serving plate or a turntable. When it comes to baking a rainbow cake, there are many ways you can go about it. You can use colorful frosting or color the batter with food coloring. You can also use edible markers to draw the colors on the cake and make your patterns. Milk: Use any milk you have. It helps to thin out the frosting and make it easier to spread on the cake. Add gel icing color to the bowls (one color per bowl) and gently fold until the color is mixed throughout. You should have one bowl each of purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. I’m thinking pinks and reds for Valentine’s Day and vibrant purple and green for a spooky Halloween cake. IngredientsMake layers. In your prepared 8-inch cake pans, layer the colors by adding a spoonful of each color into the center. The colors will spread and push out to form the rainbow layers on their own. Repeat until you have used all of the cake batter. I make my buttercream like normal by beating room temperature unsalted butter on its own for several minutes to make it really loose and supple, and then I gradually add in the icing sugar! I make sure to beat this for quite a long time.
