Religion sickens me to my core and there is a big difference in loving Jesus and Christianity vs this toxic “church culture” I’m talking about. With all due respect and love, I felt like she’s still brainwashed and I was reading a promotion for Christianity.

In this book Jinger shines a light on so many non-biblical teachings (though masked to look and sound biblical) she grew up learning. I wish I was surprised that it's clear Jinger has gone from one cultish sect of Christianity, IBLP, to another one, Calvinism. While Jinger remains a Christ follower, she experienced an “earth-shaking realization” after studying the Bible “for the first time” as an adult.

They were a bit surprised to hear that because, as they were descendants of Abraham, they thought they had never been enslaved (John 8:33). The true freedom that Jesus gives is freedom (1) from the penalty of sin—there is no more condemnation for those in Him (Romans 8:1), and no longer are we children of wrath (Ephesians 2:1–3); (2) from the power of sin—no longer are we in bondage to sin, but now we can do righteousness; without faith it is impossible to please Him, but, with faith, we can please Him (Hebrews 11:6); and one day we will be free (3) from the presence of sin—when our eternal life is fulfilled, we will be like Him and without sin (Romans 8:28–30). She and her siblings were raised in the Institute of Basic Life Principles (IBLP) religion – and realized that her “life was built on rules, not God’s Word. Jinger Vuolo, the sixth child in the famous Duggar family of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On, recounts how she began to question the unhealthy ideology of her youth and learned to embrace true freedom in Christ. This book is packed with scripture to counter the man-made rules that the IBLP forces people to follow. It is clear that Jinger has no real grasp of the deconstruction movement or the real reasons people left IBLP and Christianity.

I was so afraid of having a ‘dating spirit’ that there were times when I wouldn’t even talk to a young man I might’ve been attracted to,” she wrote, even confessing that she “wasn’t yet convinced [she] wanted to marry” Vuolo when they were given permission to court. There's a lot of talk floating around these days about Christians who are deconstructing their faith. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She believed this level of commitment would guarantee God’s blessing, even though in private she felt constant fear that she wasn’t measuring up to the high standards demanded of her.I finished this book with no new thoughts or feelings about Jinger, and I think this should have been a collection of essays because most of the content was just the same words just told slightly differently each time. Even though their communities would have totally rejected my family, home schooling put us in the same circles in a way. She is an author whose books include her personal memoir The Hope We Hold and a children's book, You Can Shine So Bright. When he explained the concept, I realized … He wanted me to think for myself and figure out what my convictions were and what I liked and disliked. It was actually my oldest daughter growing prideful and judgmental towards others over the skirt wearing that opened my eyes.
