Tzu – A Chinese term meaning “master” or “teacher,” often used in the context of philosophy or literature. The Dentist and the Crocodile - A crocodile goes to the dentist and the dentists thinks he's going to eat him but a woman turns up and claims the crocodile is her pet.

Reissued in the exciting new Roald Dahl branding, this is an inventive and irreverant collection for older children and adults alike, which bubbles over with Roald Dahl's extraordinary humour and imagination. Residue – A remaining substance or material after a process or event, often used in the context of chemistry or manufacturing. Coo – A soft, murmuring sound made by doves or other birds, often used to express affection or comfort.

Donor Most of the stories contain slight sexual references. Due to slightly risqué material this book carries a warning that it is unsuitable for "small people". Overgrew – To grow too large or to take over an area, often used in the context of plants or landscaping.

And Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, where Aladdin becomes a djinn himself and lends a hand to Shakespeare and Mozart.Overthrew – To remove from power or to overthrow a government or authority, often used in the context of politics or revolutions. Through – From beginning to end or from one side to the other, often used in the context of travel or progress. Vu – A French term meaning “seen” or “viewed,” often used in the context of French language or culture. Booboo – A minor injury or mistake, often used in the context of a child’s injury or as a term of endearment. I don’t recall anything about Rhyme Stew, as I probably only read it a couple of times, decades ago, so it’s like re-reading it for the first time. I probably loved it as an 8 year old, but nearly 30 years later, not so much. Revolting Rhymes is definitely much better.

Shoo – To drive away or scare off something or someone, often used in the context of animals or pests. Quentin Blake's iconic illustrations are absolutely perfect in every Roald Dahl book we've read. They magically work together with his stories, creating interesting characters. The kids have grown used to seeing his illustrations in most of their favorite Dahl books. Kazoo – A small, simple musical instrument that creates a buzzing sound when played, often used in the context of children’s music or novelty acts. Our sympathies lie with the echidna, not with the rotten kid, and we cheer at the end when the beast turns on Roy for dessert.

Reviews

Rhyme Stew is a 1989 collection of poems for children by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake. In a sense it is a more adult version of Revolting Rhymes (1982).

Honeydew – A type of melon with sweet, juicy flesh, often used in the context of fruit salads or smoothies. Revenue – Income or money earned from a business or investment, often used in the context of economics or finance. Ru – A Chinese term meaning “confusion” or “chaos,” often used in the context of philosophy or politics. There are some absolutely dreadful poems in Rhyme Stew. The poem A Hand in the Bird is horrible! It’s about sexual assault! (A man—a vicar, to be precise—runs his hand up the leg of a woman at a church bazaar, and into her underwear! Ugh! How gross!) And the poem Physical Training is about an adult gym teacher asking her underaged student to stay behind after class and sexually assaulting him!The Tortoise and the Hare and The Emperor’s New Clothes are some of the better poems, probably because they are more like the Revolting Rhymes poems, which are twists on fairy tales. Peekaboo – A game played with infants in which someone hides and then suddenly appears while saying “peekaboo,” often used to promote social development in infants. Glue – A substance used to bond materials together, often used in the context of crafting or construction.
